Pittsfield, Vermont
Last week we decided to take a trip up to Vermont for some hiking and mountain biking! We ended up near Killington, Vermont- home to every type of outdoor activity you could imagine.
Our first full day in the area was spent in Pittsfield, Vermont; a quick drive from Killington. We decided to check out the Green Mountain Trails- located on the outskirts of Pittsfield. They had a great little parking lot and offered maps and information regarding the trails. My favorite thing about this trail system was that it is both hiker and mountain bike friendly and it is encouraged to take your dog. This is huge for us given I hike and my fiancé rides his mountain bike- and we always have our dog with us!
The trails were well maintained; it was obvious that they really want you to have a great time! The initial trail starts right from the parking lot which makes it easy to get to/from. Once you get on the trail, you will go through a beautiful open field and then cross a small river- yes, your feet will most likely get wet so plan accordingly! After crossing the river, you will start up the mountain; about 5 minutes up the mountain you will see multiple signs and trail information. At that point, you can figure out where you want to hike or ride.
About 1.5-2 miles into the hike, you will come across a great little speak-easy that is available to use throughout the summer- equipped with a yurt, outdoor stove, pizza oven, water, etc. We continued up the mountain along a great trail, it had a gradual incline and was very well maintained. My dog and I ended up hiking almost 8 miles; and still didn’t reach the top (we will have to go back!). My fiancé went closer to 12 miles on the mountain bike- he said the trails were great for mountain biking with a lot of diversity in terrain.
I would highly recommend this trail system to anyone- there is plenty of variety in distance and terrain; anyone can do it!
